Carriage Driving Dictionary

Breeching - "Britching" Breeching is the wide strap the wraps around the horse's rump.  This strap is the breaking system for carts and carriages.  As the driver asks the horse to slow or stop, the carriage will continue to  move forward.  The forward motion of the carriage pushes the hold back straps on a single  horse vehicle or the quarter straps on a multiple horse vehicle forward.  These straps connect to the breeching.  The forward motion of these straps is halted by the breeching, thus slowing or stopping the carriage or cart.

Hold back straps Used when driving a single horse.  Hold back straps are wrapped around the shafts of a carriage or cart and connect to the breeching.  The hold back straps are part of the braking system that stops the carriage.
Lines Long straps or reins that connect to the horse's bit and run back to the driver.  The lines allow the driver to communicate with the horse.
Line Drop A weight, typically a heart shaped piece of leather connected to a ring.  It is used when driving a team of horses.  The line drop is placed where the middles lines cross between the horses.  It helps to keep the lines from getting tangled.
